All About Mock Rock

About 5 years ago I took a job in the highest hostel in England at Honister Pass in the Lake District and began climbing whenever I could at the indoor climbing centre in Keswick.

After three months of intensive training I felt ready for the ‘real rock’ experience, so I set off down Honister Pass to have a go at bouldering.

I expected to be at least as good on real rock as I was in the indoor wall but I was much worse, the unfamiliar slippery nature of rock and the experience in general was completely different to what I had learnt on the indoor wall.

This is where the idea for Mock Rock climbing holds came from, climbing holds which are exact copies of real rock features.

What I wanted to create was something between the real-rock experience and that of the artificial indoor wall.
I am fortunate to have a dad who has over 30 years experience as an engineering consultant and casting specialist (precision parts for F1 cars), so with his technical experience at hand we set about creating the range.

We developed various ‘Mock Rock’ holds and later (with the help of more experienced climbers) we extended the range and added the more traditional style climbing holds.

After selling thousands of holds often the main issue for people was the difficulty in fitting these holds to masonry; we decided to add polyurethane rubber-backing to all our holds. This resulted in a climbing hold range that grip well on all surfaces and are less likely to crack under pressure.

Mock Rock began selling a few holds on EBay, then after taking on some help in our second year we sold over 50’000 climbing holds with only 15 product returns.

This year, 2010 sees Mock Rock Climbing holds move to new premises and the expansion of our manufacturing capabilities. Our new online shop can be found by clicking this link  www.buyclimbingholds.com  or selecting buy climbing holds from the main menu. We promise a quick turnaround time and high quality climbing hold products.

All our climbing holds are rubber-backed as standard, this is down to our experience gained when installing climbing walls. A Rubber backed climbing hold does the job 5 times better than traditional climbing holds and we wouldn’t sell you anything we wouldn’t use for our own installations.

We genuinely do make all our holds in the UK and are only one of two manufacturers to still make our holds here, other climbing hold companies import their climbing holds from China or Eastern Europe.

Mock Rock manufacture, install and design climbing holds.  Our experienced team can build traverse walls using your existing masonry or build a free standing structure to contain your new climbing wall.  Our team are experienced in landscaping and can also design, build and supply your new child friendly playground.  We offer designs from simple to complicated and have a dedicated artist who can create simple bright playground murals for your new area.

Mock Rock install climbing holds and playgrounds the length and breadth of the UK and Europe.  We have installations and projects from the Isle of Man to Londonderry, with many happy customers.

2010 will see the introduction of a new and exciting traverse wall project, the like of which has never been seen before – keep checking our website for details!
