About Mock Rock Traverse Walls and Climbing Holds
A few years ago I took a job in the Lake District and began climbing whenever I could. After three months of intensive training I felt ready for the ‘real rock’ experience, so I set off down Honister Pass to have a go at bouldering. I expected to be at least as good on real rock as I was in the indoor wall but I was much worse, the unfamiliar slippery nature of rock and the experience in general was completely different to what I had learnt on the indoor wall. This is where the idea for Mock rock climbing holds came from; climbing holds which are exact copies of real rock features. What I wanted to create was something between the real-rock experience and that of the artificial indoor wall.
I am fortunate to have a dad who has over 30 years experience as an engineering consultant and casting specialist (precision parts for F1 cars), so with his technical experience at hand we set about creating the range. We developed various ‘Mock Rock’ holds and later (with the help of more experienced climbers) we extended the range and added the more traditional style climbing holds. After selling thousands of holds often the main issue for people was the difficulty in fitting these holds to masonry, so we decided to add polyurethane rubber-backing to all our holds. This resulted in a climbing hold range that grip well on all surfaces and are less likely to crack under pressure.
We initially sold these holds to various companies who would install them in schools, colleges etc but we decided to focus on climbing wall installations. We now sell direct to schools, colleges etc and also do contracting for other companies.
The School traverse walls we create are designed to challenge and keep the kids interested, climbing holds should not simply be stuck up anywhere in a line, this will result in the children being bored of them within days. With our traverse walls there are always a minimum of 4 different colour holds installed on our climbing walls. We always try and set one route which should take them some time to complete. There was a time at one school where we had created what we thought was an extra hard route, but within an hour one of the children had figured it out and completed it. Now we make sure the dreaded red-routes pose much more of a challenge.
Because we make and install the climbing holds ourselves we can offer much more for your budget, we are the only company in the UK offering 12 climbing holds per meter for £75.00. In addition we are only one of two companies in the UK making rubber-backed holds, which are far superior to traditional climbing holds. Direct onto masonry we use 80mm internally-threaded anchor points which is the highest grade fixing system available, this method results in a safe and versatile traverse wall. The climbing holds can be re-positioned over and over again so the traverse wall can evolve over time. There are lots of companies doing great traverse walls out there but it is a good idea to calculate the price per climbing hold installed to make a comparison between companies. Our price works out at £6.25 per climbing hold installed.
We are developing some exciting new traverse wall products which will be world exclusives and will be a massive leap forward in school climbing wall design. The Mock Rock mission is to offer high quality installations and raise the standard of traversing walls in schools.
The free-standing traverse walls we build are designed to be durable and versatile, at a later date more sections can be added to extend the structure. The posts on each end also have climbing holds fixed onto them it can be climbed continuously all the way around on both sides. There are many options for these climbing walls, because like everything we do we design and build them ourselves. Because we also paint playground murals we can make these traversing walls a real centre-piece to the playground.
We now also paint playground murals, we can do pretty much any design but popular themes seem to be jungle and mountains, we no longer paint these direct onto masonry due to the UK’s usually damp weather it just isn’t practical- so we paint the walls on boards and piece them together on installation day. These can be combined with traversing walls or simply be on there own to brighten up the playground.
